If an assignment asks for "about" or "approximately" 300 words, a few words over or under is almost always fine. A common rule of thumb, and the written policy at many schools and universities, is to stay within 10% either side of the target. A hard limit ("no more than 250 words", "maximum 650 words") is different: treat it as a ceiling and stay under it.
The 10% Rule in Practice
| Target | 10% range | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| About 250 words | 225-275 | 222 is just under; 320 is far over |
| About 300 words | 270-330 | 294 is fine |
| 350-450 words | 350-450 | A stated range means stay inside it |
| About 500 words | 450-550 | 480 is fine |
| About 1,000 words | 900-1,100 | 1,060 is fine |
| About 2,000 words | 1,800-2,200 | 2,300 is too long |
Always check the instructions first: some teachers and competitions are stricter, and online forms often cut you off at the limit. Application essays are a common hard limit; the Common App personal essay, for example, allows 250 to 650 words.
What Counts Toward the Word Count?
It depends on the institution, but a typical convention is:
- Usually counted: the main text, headings within it, in-text citations and quotations.
- Usually not counted: the title page, abstract, reference list or bibliography, appendices, and tables or figure captions.
- Footnotes: rules vary; many universities count footnotes that add discussion but not those that only give references.
Word processors also count slightly differently from each other, for example on hyphenated words, numbers, URLs and dashes. A difference of a few words between programs is normal. Our word counter counts the way Microsoft Word does: anything separated by spaces that contains a letter or digit is one word.
How Many Pages Is My Essay?
With a 12 pt font and 1-inch margins on letter or A4 paper:
| Words | Single spaced | Double spaced |
|---|---|---|
| 250 | ½ page | 1 page |
| 375 | ¾ page | 1½ pages |
| 500 | 1 page | 2 pages |
| 750 | 1½ pages | 3 pages |
| 1,000 | 2 pages | 4 pages |
| 1,500 | 3 pages | 6 pages |
| 2,000 | 4 pages | 8 pages |
| 2,500 | 5 pages | 10 pages |
| 5,000 | 10 pages | 20 pages |
Times New Roman fits slightly more words per page than Arial; see the words per page calculator for other fonts, spacing and paper sizes.
How Many Paragraphs?
Academic paragraphs usually run about 100 to 200 words. That makes a 500-word essay roughly 3 to 5 paragraphs, a 1,000-word essay about 5 to 8 paragraphs, and the classic five-paragraph essay somewhere around 500 to 800 words.
Hitting the Target
- Too long: cut filler phrases ("in order to" → "to", "due to the fact that" → "because"), merge repeated points and trim long quotations.
- Too short: add an example, explain a step you skipped, or answer the obvious counter-argument. Avoid padding; readers notice.
