There is no fixed answer, because handwriting size varies far more than typed fonts. But the number of words on a page is simply lines per page × words per line, and both are easy to estimate. With average-size handwriting, a full letter-size notebook page holds roughly 200 to 300 words on wide-ruled paper and 250 to 350 words on college-ruled paper.
Estimates by Paper Type
These ranges assume average adult handwriting, writing on every line, and normal paragraph breaks. Small, tight handwriting can fit noticeably more; large or very neat school handwriting fits less.
| Paper | Approx. lines | Words per line | Words per page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Letter-size notebook, wide ruled (8½ × 11 in) | 27-30 | 8-10 | 200-300 |
| Letter-size notebook, college ruled | 32-35 | 9-11 | 250-350 |
| Yellow legal pad (8½ × 11¾ in, legal/wide ruled) | 28-32 | 9-11 | 250-330 |
| Composition book (9¾ × 7½ in), wide ruled | 24-26 | 7-9 | 170-230 |
| Composition book, college ruled | 30-32 | 8-10 | 230-300 |
| A4 notebook (210 × 297 mm), 8 mm ruling | 30-34 | 9-11 | 270-350 |
| A5 notebook (148 × 210 mm) | 22-26 | 7-9 | 150-230 |
| A6 pocket notebook (105 × 148 mm) | 16-20 | 4-6 | 70-120 |
| Index card, 3 × 5 in | 10-11 | 5-7 | 50-75 |
| Index card, 4 × 6 in | 12-14 | 7-9 | 85-125 |
A handwritten page usually holds about half as many words as a typed, single-spaced page in a 12 pt font, which fits around 500 words. For typed pages, use the words per page calculator.
Measure Your Own Handwriting
The most reliable number is your own. Count the words on three full lines of something you have written, divide by three to get your words per line, then count the lines on one page.
Why Handwritten Word Counts Vary So Much
- Letter size and spacing: the biggest factor. Two people filling the same notebook page can differ by 100 words or more.
- Line spacing (ruling): wide ruling is 11/32 in (8.7 mm), college ruling 9/32 in (7.1 mm) and narrow ruling 1/4 in (6.4 mm). Tighter ruling means more lines per page.
- Skipping lines: writing on every other line, as many teachers ask for drafts, halves the words per page.
- Margins and paragraphs: indents, short final lines and headings all take space away from words.
- Vocabulary: long words fit fewer per line. Typical English prose averages about 4.5 to 5 letters per word.
Common Questions This Answers
